If you see a crow roost in the Lehigh Valley area and can estimate their number, please reply to any post with the place, time, date, type of place, habitat, and any interesting crow behavior and vocalizations. The Allentown Crow Roost has numbers in the tens of thousands at least, but estimates are difficult because of time constraints on the average person, sheer numbers flying in constantly, and the disappearing light of winter nights. So don’t try to be perfect. Counts to the nearest hundred are fine. The crows tend to pre-roost along Martin Luther King Junior Drive on the near southeast side near downtown. They fly over Wire Mill Arboretum at Fountain Park to the Lehigh County Authority Wastewater Treatment Plant area. There they are on buildings, wires, and the ground for about forty five minutes in actually what may be in tens of thousands till they fly north-northwest to where I do not know. Anybody who knows what place or places they sleep at would be very helpful in supplying this invaluable information. I have been at many pre-roosts where numbers seem to be at the hundreds of thousands, have heard 200,000 in Philadelphia, and 350,000 and 650,000 for the Allentown pre-roost from reliable, experienced birdwatchers. But, as crow expert John Emlen pointed out, crows are large birds compared to say robins and starlings. So, he said, numbers can seem large because they take up more space.
So, please feel free to have fun contributing to our knowledge about Allentown roosting American and Fish Crows, the two species of crows here and in our roost. For more information about their natural history, or biology and ecology, go… Continue reading
